Summary Information for Anahuac ISD

October 2, 2005 Update

(this information will be updated as appropriate)

(Changes are in italics)

The following information is a combination of local information and information provided to districts affected by Rita from the Texas Education Agency (TEA):

General Information:

Ø      At the present time, we are planning to resume school within 72 hours after electricity is restored.

Ø      As of October 1, 2005, the estimated time frame for restoration of electricity is from 2 days to 2 weeks.

Ø      At the present time, you may receive information by:

o       Checking the door at the administration office.

o       Listening to TV and radio (Channel 11 seems to be running our information across the bottom of the screen more than the other stations.)

o       Calling the administration office at 409-267-3600. Available 7:00AM to 7:00PM.

o       Visiting the khou.com website under county-by-county damage reports and clicking on Chambers View Others.

o       Visiting the TEA website at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/hcane/.

o       Visiting the County website at http://www.co.chambers.tx.us/ritaRelief.pdf and scrolling down to schools.

o       Listening to 99.9 FM in Liberty, Shine-all-nine.

o       Listening to 560 AM, KLVI in Beaumont.

o       Visiting the school website at www.anahuac.isd.esc4.net. Available 7:00AM to 7:00PM.

Ø      According to the State, we will have the option of whether or not to make up the 10 days.  However, when and how to make up days is a local decision.  After power is restored, the administration will decide how many of the 10 days we will try to make up and how many days total we will have to add to the calendar.  A new calendar for the 2005-2006 school year will be distributed.

Student Information:

Ø      If a family has lost or otherwise can not use their home due to the hurricane, the children are considered homeless and can immediately enroll elsewhere.

Ø      Students who are living in other districts as a result of the storm may enroll in other districts if the district is willing to accept them.

Ø      Several of our surrounding districts are full and, although they would like to help our students, they may not have room to take them.

Ø      Parents may wish to wait until October 10 . when the circumstances at Anahuac become better known to make a decision on enrolling their children in other schools.

Ø      When AISD resumes classes, any student who has been attending another school and returns to Anahuac, will have to follow the adjusted calendar.  This may result in a student attending more than 180 days.

Ø      All Senior students who have not taken or passed the TAKS exit level exam and who are wishing to graduate from a Texas school this year should take the October TAKS exit exam Retest opportunities will be made available.  Depend on your school principal to take care of this for you.

Ø      Athletes who wish to play for another district will have a 15-day wait time.  When returning to Anahuac, they have to be enrolled for 1 day and then they become eligible.

Staff Information:

Ø      Federal accountability will create a special hurricane displaced subgroup, but all students should be tested.

Ø      State accountability rules are yet to be determined.

Ø      When students reenter our school system from another system, the determination of how to count grades is a local decision.  You will receive guidance from the administration.

Ø      NCLB will not be waiving the 95% testing rule.

Ø      TEA says that it is not possible to change the state testing schedule for next spring.  The agency will work with the affected districts.  Quote from the Commissioner, “You guys do not need to worry about that now! Don’t fret over that.”

Ø      Teachers may work as substitutes in other districts until needed in Anahuac.

Administrator Information:

Ø      Spoiled food will not be counted against our commodities.

Ø      Federal Title V funds can be used for bus drivers, maintenance etc.

Ø      Deadlines will be extended as needed for reports such as OEYP.

Board of Trustees Information:

Ø      We have our lawyer working on a resolution for you to consider concerning payroll.  A special Board meeting will be called when we have the information for you.  The Superintendent will call you when a meeting time is decided.

Ø      We will be able to file for 100% reimbursement of our deductible with FEMA.

Ø      State aide payments will continue.

Ø      Decreased ADA as a result of the storm will be given consideration
