INTERVENTION
ASSISTANCE TEAM
A STUDENT
SUPPORT PREREFERRAL PROCESS
The
Intervention Assistance Team (IAT) is a prereferral support process for all
students at the campus level. The team is composed of the counselor, an
administrator, and well-intentioned, capable teachers who have established
successful learning environments for all students. Other personnel with
specialized expertise may be included. The purpose of the IAT is to improve a
student’s academic, social, and behavior performance. These individuals meet to
define the areas of concerns for the student.
The team seeks creative ways to maximize the use of available resources.
This collaboration model provides a forum for routine and timely problem
solving. Parent conferences are an important part of this process.
The
process involves the following guidelines:
q Teachers, parents, or
administrators who have concerns about a student with academic, social and/or
behavior difficulties should contact the counselor.
q The counselor will gather
the completed teacher(s) input forms from those who work with the student. The
teachers will provide any required documentation such as work samples,
checklists, and record of parent conferences
q The counselor/designee will
collect current and cumulative information including testing results, grades,
attendance, disciplinary history, and any other relevant data.
q The school nurse will
complete the vision/hearing screening form.
q The parent information form
will be sent home to the student’s parents.
q An IAT meeting should be
scheduled by the counselor when all forms are completed and other necessary
data have been gathered regarding the student.
q At the IAT meeting all
information should be reviewed and interventions/strategies recommended in
order for the student to be successful.
q A trial period should be set
for review of committee recommendations. The team shall document what
interventions/strategies will be put into practice, who will be responsible for
implementation, the timelines for implementation, what will be used to
determine progress (ex. benchmark testing, number of disciplinary referrals),
and indicating when the group will meet again.
q The teacher(s) implementing
the team’s recommendations will sign the Receipt of Instructional Intervention
Strategies. The IAT may direct the teacher to provide accommodations that the
team believes are appropriate.
q The team reconvenes
according to the timeline and documents the outcome of the intervention. If the
student is successful, the team will continue to monitor the student’s
progress.
q If the interventions are not
successful, the team problem solves the concerns, develops different
interventions and timelines and continues to monitor the student’s progress.
Documentation of intervention efforts, testing results, and time tried must be
maintained. This process may be repeated as long as necessary.
q When members suspect that
the student may have a disability, the team shall recommend that formal testing
is indicated and refer to dyslexia, 504, or special education testing as
appropriate.
