Anahuac ISD provides a variety of special programs to meet the academic and social needs of its students.

Special Education

Special Education is designed for students ages three through twenty-one with a disability and educational need for services.  Students are served through a continuum of placement options from mainstreaming to self-contained classrooms based on the individual needs of the students as determined by the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee. All campuses have a Content Mastery Center to provide reinforcement for instruction provided in the regular classroom. A Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) serving students ages three to five is also available.

504 Services

Section 504 is part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.  The act seeks to prohibit discrimination and ensure that qualifying students have educational opportunities and benefits equal to those provided to non-disabled students. An eligible student under 504 is one who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity such as walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, or learning.

Career and Technical Education

Career and technical programs prepare students to manage the dual roles of family member and wage earner. Career and technology programs enable young people to gain entry-level employment in a high-skill, high-wage job and/or to continue their education. Anahuac ISD offers vocational courses in Agriculture, Business, and Home Economics.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

The ESL program provides instruction in English for Limited English Proficient students and focuses on assisting the students in learning content area subject matter. ESL strategies include graphic organizers, visuals, manipulatives, and appropriate materials. Trained bilingual paraprofessionals work with the ESL teachers to help accelerate the acquisition of English proficiency.

Bilingual Education

Anahuac ISD offers a bilingual program for Spanish speaking Limited English Proficient students beginning at PK.  The bilingual program utilizes the student’s native language and English in the learning process. Students receive native language instruction until the student is able to participate successfully in an all-English setting.

Gifted and Talented

Gifted/Talented services are targeted for those who excel or who have the potential to excel in core courses and who exhibit gifted/talented characteristics. The district recognizes that students identified as gifted/talented can come from all races, socioeconomic groups, geographical locales, and environments

At grades 3-12 gifted and talented students are served in the Challenge Program and are identified for general intellectual ability or for specific subject matter ability. Students may be nominated for the gifted and talented program at any time by teachers, counselors, parents, or other interested persons.

At grades K-2 the district offers a Talent Pool Program. All kindergarten students are considered candidates for the talent pool. Students in first and second grades may be considered annually for the Challenge Pool. Those selected remain in the talent pool through the second grade and receive direct instruction from the teacher of gifted and talented students.
